Kauai has four different types of dolphin, the spinner, bottle nose, rough toothed and the spotted.

SNORKLING WITH TURTLES

Every destination has its signature attraction, whether it be sea lions, manta, rays or sharks. Without question one of the stars of Kauai’s underwater experience are the beautiful green turtles.

Hawaii has an abundance of sea turtles, with such a friendly temperament they will greet the boat before snorkelers or divers get into the water. Even if you swim out from the shore you’ll probably spot them whilst they bask in the sunshine! Their definitely not shy creatures!!

HUMPBACK WHALES

Although winter brings cooler water it also brings Hawaii's other feature attraction the Humpback whales!

Each year between November - June, Hundreds of these gentle giants migrate to the islands from Alaska, navigating by instinct alone. Hawaii is their winter holiday home place to play and start new generations!!
The humpback whales travel in pods. and are most often spotted not by the eye but by the sound of their tremendous blow when they reach the surface!

Once on surface off Kauai’s coastline its not unusual for whales to play for ten to fifteen minutes. Slapping their flukes on the water and launching themselves high in the air, in what is referred to as a "breach", soon thereafter there will be the flip of the tail, as the whales "sound" or dive deep to the oceans depths. The morning is usually the best time for whale watching as the ocean is flat, making this easier to spot the whales.

Humpback whales may be observed from land if you prefer solid ground! A great lookout place is the Kauai Kilauea lighthouse. Kealia lookout and various other high points along the coastal area are a great place to start. When your in the right place spotting whales its easy! Just look out for the majestic plumes of water (blows) rising in the air and the playful splashes made by these gigantic creatures! Observers may not approach by vessel or by swimming within 100 yards of a whale. However there is no rule which keeps whales away from approaching you! The experienced leaders of the whale watching tours know exactly how to approach the whales and encourage them to come close.

WHALE WATCHING EXCURSIONS

What an exciting way to spend a couple of hours! There are many types of boat to choose from, the larger boats which some people prefer as it gives them the sense of stability. If this is your choice then it’s a good idea to choose one that has two decks, as you will get a better vantage point from the upper level. Others may prefer the more adventurous options, such as rafting, or the zodiacs which zip across the ocean at high speed!

These vessels carry small groups of people, are more intimate, and allow you to ask more questions! But which ever of the vessels you choose you will undoubtedly become mesmerized by the experience! as the whales are spectacular to watch
